The history of The Catered Affair (TCA) is a classic example of an entrepreneur developing an avocation into a vocation. As an enthusiastic amateur chef and party giver, founder Holly Safford was encouraged by her friends and guests to consider becoming a caterer. In the late 1970s, with the New American Cuisine movement taking hold, the Boston area was hungry for someone to take event catering to the next level. Starting out in her home with a few cookbook recipes, a modest kitchen, and a flair for entertaining, Ms. Safford was soon a household name among the Boston-area food cognoscenti. Working with Julia Child as a recipe tester solidified her reputation as one of Boston’s leading food experts.
TCA has grown in 36 years from a small home-based business to one of New England’s largest catering companies. In a sophisticated and demanding market with high expectations, TCA’s national reputation for excellence in food and service has positioned it as Boston’s pre-eminent full-service caterer. With 300 employees and a 15,000 square foot headquarters, our focus is unchanged.
